Shaping Future Transportation
Hybrid drives form one pillar of the Shaping Future Transportation strategy employed by Daimler Trucks to establish environmentally friendly commercial vehicle technologies on the market. Another key element of the strategy involves biofuels and new synthetic fuels, whose production has a more favorable CO2 balance. Also being examined is natural gas, whose combustion releases much less CO2 than diesel.
The Shaping Future Transportation strategy also involves getting the good old diesel engine ready for the future. After all, diesels will continue to dominate the commercial vehicle industry for some time to come. Today’s BLUETEC diesel engines from Mercedes-Benz, which Daimler Trucks installs in its vehicles worldwide, are ultramodern high-tech units. Compared to the diesel engine generation of 1990, they emit over 90 percent fewer particulates and nitrogen oxides. In terms of their hauling capacity, trucks equipped with BLUETEC systems consume only one liter of fuel per 100 km by comparison with passenger vehicles, corresponding to a fuel efficiency of well over 200 mpg. Car drivers will have to wait a while for that kind of fuel efficiency, however. Shaping Future Transportation also includes many other intelligent solutions that reconcile the needs of business with those of climate protection.
